Colpisce come sempre la naturalezza della scrittura velata dalla sottile ironia drammatica, tipica di Sciascia. The Moro Affair, by Leonard Sciascia. But I found it to be a bit of a slog at times, and I’m not sure why NYRB classics thought this story would appeal to its readership.

There is certainly more to the Moro kidnapping and murder than was reported at the time. If you are interested in the ways one may study literatuyre as a form of archeolgocal method of understanding history–this volume is a must rea, a masterpiece. This is a great book, but perhaps only of interest to those of a certain age who recall the kidnapping and murder of the Italian politician Aldo Moro in An Islamic Journey and its companion volume.

Sciascia does a fantastic job of examining how language determines moral engagement and responsibility, with an analysis of the complex communication between Moro and the outside world, which set the stage for his ultimate demise.

A present day American reader needs to read between the lines and possibly do xciascia independent internet research to figure out what’s really going on. That government actions, or terrorist actions, or possible collaborations of afffaire could mean something sends chills up the spine. Sciascia is inconclusive, and that is probably the most chilling thing.

The book becomes a fascinating exploration of writing in relation to the presentation of events of something “already written”.
