This book is essential and since its warnings and prescriptions have gone unheeded for 20 years, it is even more urgently blackshirtts today than it was when published. Fascinating discussion of several Cold War angles on the overthrow of communism not to be touched elsewhere.
It’s an accurate history of the twentieth century which you won’t find in a standard textbook nor, of course, in popular media. The topics covered are broad – ranging from the role of big business in helping install fascist autocracies in Italy and Germany to the unwillingness of contemporary Marxist theorists to engage with ideas of class – but all blackshhirts connected meaningfully and reasonably.

He’s great at writing against the USA and against anti-communism but he’s much worse at mounting an effective defence of socialist countries. I recommend this book as a great foundation for anybody interested in the debate regarding communism’s historical merits in opposition to capitalism or anarchism.
Surprisingly disappointing, and I say this as someone who agrees with virtually everything Parenti says in this book. Fascism is not an aberration, he points out, but a “rational” and integral component of the system.
