One is the son of a senator, a boy of privilege and ambition to whom much has been given and from whom much is expected. The author has a wonderful way of making you feel like you are there. I found his performance to be average here, and it’s hard to tell if that’s due to the material or not. It’s not that annoying to be honest, unlike some YA books I’ve read. In summary, my neurosis and love of this period in Roman History keeps bumping into my overt affection for it.

My first real trip into historical fiction other than the works of Jeff Shaara has turned out to be very enjoyable. It covers his, and Marcus’s, upbringing, early experiences, hard gladitorial training and tutoring, and their early experiences in the political arena surrounding the Roman Senate and Senator’s.
My second issue A very disappointing read I’m afraid. One other we might add is Jack Whyte, because Mr. Sulla quickly defeats Mithridates iggupden Greece, but spares his life on his promise “never to attack Rome as long as he [Sulla] lives”. My second issue was the YA feel of this book. Gaius Julius Caesar in this book is a cipher with no real personality. I get to say ‘don’t take my word for it’ to anybody reading this review.
Buy for others
Although, you have to remember these are attitudes of the Roman Empire and to make it otherwise would just be yates. Writing style aside, this book is not historical fiction. However, I chose to ignore this while reading the book. Even though I love history and historical fiction, I’ve never found Roman history interesting.
That was the only problem I saw that might hinder you iggylden enjoying this. This is ultimately little more than a protracted introduction to a bigger story, which Iggulden will surely go on to tell.
The Gates of Rome

In a note, Iggulden does mention that most of Julius Conn Iggulden vivid imagination and superior prose make of The Gates of Rome a great historical fiction. I love ancient Egypt, the pre-colonization civilizations of the Americas, any history after the Romans, just not the Romans or Greeks if I can group those two time periods together.
The two friends are forced to walk different paths, and by the time they meet again everything will have changed. If this were an alternate history, it wouldn’t bother me, because in an alternate history novel, the end is different duh, right?
This article contains very little context, or is unclear to readers who know little about the book. In the end I really liked how easy it was to grasp the action and story-line of the novel. Credit offered by NewDay Ltd, over 18s only, subject to status. I am not claimimg that Iggulden is some sort of literary genius – far from it – but what he does do, he does well.
It’s much more interesting reading and I think he did excellent work in richly developing numerous characters in all five of these historical novels. Another example is in the beginning of the book we are introduced to Brutus and Caesar as being both eight years old when in actuality, Caesar is 15 years Brutus’ senior. I’m thd one to rime too many fiction novels, but having been given The Gods of War Book 4 and brushed up prior to reading on my Rome history, I was engrossed and couldn’t put it down.
