It is ghastly from the start and then this is compounded by Nat’s murder behind the locked door of his room. So when Nathaniel is found dead in his locked study there are plenty of suspects to choose from. After that, I was just reading the book to see how the Inspector goes on: Written inyou can imagine that it was a kinder, more genteel style of writing. We’re told repeatedly that Stephen cares for no one’s opinion, and we see his rudeness toward just about everyone except Matilda, so it’s difficult to imagine how he could be manipulated into offering marriage.

Not the best by the author, but still engaging. I finally finished this story!! Death in the Stocks Georgette Heyer. I re-read a number of Xasca romances fairly regularly. He really is a jerk but his wit was always great. While some critics thought her novels were too detailed, others considered the level of detail to be Heyer’s greatest asset. In a word, nostalgic; two words, classic mystery; three words, jolly good fun.

This novel isn’t a bad attempt. The first half is mostly setting the scene with introductions and glimpses into characters’ personalities and hints to possible murder motivations as they arrive to the house party.

This was the worst party ever. The second last in my project of reading all of Georgette Heyer’s mysteries, this was a fun read. Bull-terriers and Stephen Herriard.

I enjoyed this book, casac it was hard going the first half-once I got past the interminable family squabbling, the sardonic grinning Stephen, and the quelling looks from butler Sturry is was very good. The method of the kill was not hinted in a way that I thought we were supposed to be able to figure out as we read it, so that was not worth puzzling over.

This is a true “locked room” murder in every sense of the word, and while I figured out the “who” of the crime pretty early on, I never did figure casda the “how” until the final reveal. A hint of Heyer’s interest in the field of historical romance can be inferred from what might be called The Clue of the Vanishing Empress. View all 10 comments. This book is useful for rounding out one’s Heyer collection, but it isn’t one I’ll be returning to very often, even at Christmas.


It casac been particularly good to tackle this one as a buddy read with my friend Jemidar. However, the characters seemed just a little too similar to some in the first Hemingway book, one connected with the theatre who seemed to act a part often actually constantly ; a young lady who seemed to enjoy provoking the Inspector, and such.

All in all, this was a good period mystery.
