He had entered the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, expecting to end up a pop star, but joined the choir because there were few pop star options in the curriculum and because of the number of attractive women singing.
Jazz Latin New Age. The genesis of Eric Whitacre ‘s Go, lovely Rose coincides with the beginning of his own musical career. The request that the woman “suffer herself to be desired” expands upwards whtiacre sympathetic dissonance, the rose’s death casts back down the musical ranges, and Whitacre reserves powerful harmonic motions for “all things rare” and the final gaze upon the “wondrous and fair” rose.
Yet the course of his life was changed by singing under the baton of David Weiller, a person Whitacre describes as “that one special teacher that ends up changing the entire course of your life.
He reflects some local aspects of the text in the more urgent rhythms of “tell her,” the awed voyeuristic repeat of “graces spied,” and the literal solos springing out of the choral desert as the poet imagines the rose alone in a barren setting.
