He has a very dry sense of humor that I think can be off-putting to some people but the real meat of his work at the very least will get you thinking and at best motivate you to take up a consciousness transformation practice.

Anyone used to applying research or philosophy should be able to easily move past the many facile critical reviews of this book along with all of Wilber’s generalizations, polemics, and mistakes.

Wilber has not read anything in the original language, and his summaries of the philosophers that I know well mainly Germans in the ss are obtuse and shallow. Say what you will about Ken Wilber or his followers, I find myself referring back to the ideas in this book frequently.
He particularly focuses on modernity and postmodernity: The High Mountains of Portugal.

In the fifth chapter, “The Emergence Of Human Nature”, Wilber uses Jean Gebser ‘s account of the development of human consciousness to show how the West progressed from the magic to the mythic to the rational mentalities. Single handedly, this is one of the most profound books I have read.

In the tenth chapter, “This-Worldly, Otherworldly”, Wilber describes various attempts to repair modernism’s fractured and flattened worldview, especially Schelling’s existential idealism. If you read it in little chunks and don’t get ambitious about getting to the end of it, it is delightful bedtime reading to go very deeply into Integral Theory.
